Reflecting on NAGA’s Triennial

The 81st General Convention of the Episcopal Church was a pivotal experience in my spiritual journey. I was honored to attend, thanks to the generosity of the National Altar Guild Association. The Convention, held in Louisville, KY, was a whirlwind of activity, from legislative sessions and workshops to worship services and fellowship events. It was a delight to join the altar guild in moments of learning and service. The workshops offered by NAGA provided attendees with an invaluable wealth of new skills and techniques and a deeper awareness of our calling as guild members. We are not merely the cleaners and maintainers of linens and vessels — rather, we are stewards of what is sacred, both in terms of its use in liturgies and its place in the history and legacies of our parishes.

One of the most impactful aspects of Convention was the opportunity to connect with Episcopalians from across the country. I was inspired by the diversity of perspectives and experiences, and I came away with a deeper appreciation for the breadth and depth of our church. The legislative sessions were also a highlight. I was impressed by the thoughtful and respectful way delegates engaged with complex and sometimes contentious issues. It was clear that everyone present was committed to discerning God’s will for our church in a way that gave space and value to all voices.

I was particularly moved by the worship services, which were both beautiful and spiritually enriching. The music, liturgy, and preaching spoke to my heart and soul. I left each service feeling refreshed and renewed, particularly in my vocational calling as a postulant for the priesthood.

In addition to the formal activities of Convention, I enjoyed many opportunities for informal fellowship. NAGA’s leadership did a fine job coordinating memorable field trips and excursions. From our reflective visit to the Trappist Monastery to seeing bourbon come to life at the Maker’s Mark Distillery, the days were filled with laughter, meaningful conversation, and plenty of photo opportunities. I met many wonderful people and made what I believe will be lasting friendships. I am grateful for the chance to be part of this historic gathering, in which a new Presiding Bishop was elected.

The 81st General Convention was an experience that I will never forget. It was a time of growth, learning, and inspiration. I am grateful to NAGA for making it possible for me to attend, and I look forward to continuing to serve NAGA in the years to come.
